He reminds Mr, Markham of the good old days when they were 21. He also mentions that his brother-in- law, Will Ring, had just visited him. Will would also love to see Mr. Markham again. He writes about his 25 years with the San Jose school department. He also writes about what types of repairs Mr. Markham should have done to his house.

California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899). Following this success Markham moved to New York where he scored another triumph with "Lincoln and Other Poems" (1901). He became a well-known reader of his own poems and lecturer of idealistic views, but his creative output for remainder of life ...
